Away from the political maelstrom of the News of The World hacking scandal, the government released the 2010-11 annual reports and accounts of the Export Credit Guarentee Department (ECGD) yesterday. This obscure government agency underwites British exports so if foreign customers don’t pay up, the taxpayer compensates the UK firms. Sectors traditionally financed include engineering, aerospace - and defence.

Countries and groups that attack schools and hospitals will be named and shamed by the United Nations and could be liable to sanctions under a resolution passed by the Security Council on Tuesday. Perpetrators will be added to a list the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon publishes as an annex to an annual report on children and armed conflict. The list identifies those who kill, maim or rape children in armed conflicts, or recruit and use them as child soldiers.

The Mother of all Parliaments bared her teeth today and showed who’s boss, subjecting senior police officers to interrogation, summoning the Murdoch Three to answer them, and pledging to unite tomorrow to say a big fat no to Rupert Murdoch’s big fat takeover of BSkyB.
