I generally avoid reading articles by the extreme right-wing (American, Pakistani or otherwise). My news channel of choice is definitely not Fox News. And I think Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh are ignorant and infuriating bobbleheads. Maybe I should be tuned into the other side of the spectrum, but I prefer not to be angry and indignant on a regular basis.

I am an Ahmadi. Since I was a little girl, I have walked into the mosques that were plundered on May 28. Holding my father’s finger in one hand and fixing my dupatta with the other, the six year old me sat and listened to the ‘khutba’ (Friday sermon), in the same halls that were covered by the blood of my brothers, uncles and family friends last week.

Dear Prime Minister Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Clegg
We write to endorse your concern to tackle ‘short-termism’ in the nation’s democracy and to urge you to go further; to initiate a new “politics of the future” in the UK.

I had heard about Facebook’s Everyone Draw Mohammed Day, May 20th, several weeks ago, and as a British Muslim, hoped it was some kind of joke.

I feel sick to my stomach.
Today more than 70 people were killed and 108 were injured when gunmen launched simultaneous attacks on two Ahmadi mosques in Lahore. The attacks – involving blasts as well as gunfire – took place during Friday prayers, when “over 1,000 worshipers were present in the mosque.”

British Muslims for Secular Democracy released a guidance booklet for schools at our “Free Muslims: Autonomy and Creativity” conference this year. The aim was to guide teachers through the maze of religious and cultural issues affecting Muslim pupils (which, admittedly, also leave many Muslims feeling confused at the best of times). We have addressed subjects from forced marriages to sex education, from school dress codes to making allowances for Friday prayers.
