The Open Society Foundation is currently conducting its At Home in Europe project, which examines the position of minority communities in Europe. At present the project is focused on Europe's Muslim communities, and the Foundation is researching a number of monitoring reports under the banner Muslims in EU Cities. The project examines the level and nature of integration of Muslims in 11 European cities.
The Open Society Foundation has so far published three reports in its Muslims in EU Cities project - Muslims in Berlin, Muslims in Leicester, and most recently, Muslims in Hamburg.
The reports and the project provide valuable research for policymakers and advocates to use in formulating new approaches that can engage Europe's Muslim communities in political and economic processes.
Among the comments made by participants in focus groups for the research:
"I feel German because I speak the language and have adopted the culture. Yet I also feel I am Russian and Kazakh and Ukrainian Muslim. I feel good about all of these identities." - focus group participant, Berlin
"I do define myself as British, not just as a Muslim, because I was born in England, I was brought up here on fish and chips, you know, the culture is everything. It has defined me so I’ve become the person that I am because of Britain, because I’ve been born and bred here, so it’s not just that I come from a Muslim family; everything else has defined me as well." - focus group participant, Leicester |
