The Samosa Changemakers 2024/25 project is a film based mentoring project aiming to deliver support to young people in Manchester to explore and develop careers in creative industries. We want to create a network of creative leaders and changemakers for the arts. By inspiring those who would not have access to opportunities to explore this kind of career, we want to diversify the creative industries.
Our focus is on creating opportunities for working class and BAME young people, we also expanded this year’s programme to LGBT+ young people and all young people from working class backgrounds.
Feedback from the young film makers and workshop participants.
“Samosa media has been a wonderful and eye opening experience into the world of production and has given me many valuable skills and advice on how to make it in the industry if I decided I wanted to do that.”
“I feel like a lot of the time, especially coming from working class backgrounds, you don’t have access to a lot of this high level equipment, a lot of these contacts, or at the very least, you sort of feel like above you, like it’s just for sort of upper and middle class, but then this workshop really, it taught us how to use the pieces of equipment. So then when we go into the bases, we can be, just as knowledgeable and just as up to date as anyone else in the room. And it prepares you to sort of try and level the playing field almost.”
“I think just for me, a lot of my writing is me sort of channelling things that I’m going through actively in real life. So for confessions, all of the stories are based on real things that are happening to real people, but it’s just really useful and really beautiful to put it into a film form, because you can sort of process all your thoughts about it in a nice package that it isn’t a bad thing anymore. You’ve made something beautiful out of something traumatic,”
You can view a film of the workshops processes and the young people’s film work, as they are discussing their city, their hopes and plans for their futures here.
