‘Western double standards’ is a phrase often bandied around political debate concerning the Muslim world – normally, and quite rightly, in reference to Israel, whose transgressions would provoke far more outrage were they perpetrated by any other country. But many of those who so loudly decry Western double standards are themselves guilty of the very same sin.

Two hours have passed since dinner when, over the chatter of television, a sound announced death. We have heard it a few times now. The window shakes a little. It’s a hollow thud – not quite as direct as a bullet shot but more disturbing to nature, like a force appearing from nowhere and shooting through the air, announcing itself. I know what it is but await confirmation. The satellite TV loses signal and I go to make an espresso in the kitchen. An SMS text message arrives: ‘two blasts heard in Moon Market, Iqbal Town, Lahore. Near Bunda Khan! Many injurd’.

I wonder if former President General Pervez Musharraf was upset over the proceedings in the Supreme Court against the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) he had promoted. The court has scrapped the ordinance and restored all corruption cases against politicians and bureaucrats to the status they had on October 4th, 2007. And there aren’t any against General (retired) Musharraf.
