The Daily Telegraph has unearthed another dodgy MP with their snout in the expenses trough – this time junior culture minister Siôn Simon, who the newspaper claims 'secretly paid more than £40,000 in taxpayer-funded expenses to his sister'.

‘Western double standards’ is a phrase often bandied around political debate concerning the Muslim world – normally, and quite rightly, in reference to Israel, whose transgressions would provoke far more outrage were they perpetrated by any other country. But many of those who so loudly decry Western double standards are themselves guilty of the very same sin.

As Gordon Brown at this year’s Labour Party conference praised the proposed Equality Bill as one which will change Britain forever, the BBC’s cameras panned in on a beaming (and apparently “brilliant”) Minister for Equality Harriet Harman. What the camera did not (in fact could not) capture was the rustle around Middle England as the hated Harman once again became the focus of grievance.

As someone who believes our armed forces should stay well out of politics I feel very uneasy when recently retired members of the army pipe up about political parties. However I've found myself having to support those former British officers who are taking part in the Stolen Valour campaign, attacking the BNP for associating itself with the British Army as a way of gaining support for its racist agenda.
