All this story needs is an Indiana Jones figure, and Kerala is halfway to commissioning its own action-adventure movie. Well, it has found the perfect set at least. Sacks of gold coins, rubies, emeralds, other precious stones, paintings of long-dead maharajahs and maharanis, and countless other treasures, were uncovered in an underground chamber beneath the Sri Padmanabhaswamy mandir last week, by order of the Supreme Court.

Another day, another humiliating u-turn from Team Murdoch – Rebekah Brooks, who has clung on as News International chief executive, has resigned. She says the resignation makes it possible for her to give “full cooperation to all the current and future inquiries, the police investigations and the CMS [culture, media and sport select committee] appearance”.

Countries and groups that attack schools and hospitals will be named and shamed by the United Nations and could be liable to sanctions under a resolution passed by the Security Council on Tuesday. Perpetrators will be added to a list the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon publishes as an annex to an annual report on children and armed conflict. The list identifies those who kill, maim or rape children in armed conflicts, or recruit and use them as child soldiers.

It would be lovely to think that the BSkyB bid has been dropped because of Parliamentary unity and clarity of voice. Unfortunately, this is not really the case. The reality is that two other factors are likely to have led to this decision.

World leaders expressed anger and revulsion Thursday at triple bomb blasts that killed 17 people and left more than 140 injured in India’s commercial capital Mumbai. The coordinated explosions hit busy shopping and residential districts across the city, which is still emerging from the shadows of the 2008 militant attack that left 166 people dead.
